Inspired by the process of creating a master model, I prepare it for mold-making and produce the first casting.
I draw much of my inspiration from films depicting various historical periods, ranging from World War II to the American Civil War. One of my favourite battles, which has always fascinated me, is the defence at Rorke’s Drift, as depicted in the film Zulu. As you can see in my shop, I offer a wide range of items, from sandbags in multiple scales to intricately crafted buildings, particularly in 1:32 scale. My creative process begins with sketching the product I intend to sculpt. From there, I work out the scale, ensuring that, for example, a 28mm bridge fits perfectly alongside a 28mm miniature. To create the master model of a 28mm bridge, I start with foam and balsa wood to construct the basic structure. Once the main framework is complete, I focus on adding fine details and textures. Each brick is carefully cut to size from wax and adhered using PVA glue. To create realistic ground texture, I apply very fine gravel, which is then sealed with a diluted PVA solution to ensure durability. The next step is mould-making. I construct a box around the bridge, leaving a 2cm gap on all sides and ensuring the box is taller than the bridge itself. I then mix and pour a batch of silicone over the master, allowing it to cure for 24 hours. Once the silicone has set, the mould is carefully removed, and I can begin producing the first casting of the bridge. This meticulous process allows me to combine historical accuracy with high-quality craftsmanship, ensuring each piece I create is both detailed and durable.
